![]() All Roads Lead To Roma A tour of Italia in 8 days; most of the time on a coach, with bursts of intense culture. I will talk about Roman and Renaissance culture in a later blog, but for the moment I am influenced by the immediate surroundings. The culture of one country closely confined on a coach, viewing the beauty and ruin of an ancient civilization. The first sketch of the Madonna and Child on a coach trip to Rome was inspired by all of the small altars to Mary in every small nook and cranny; especially at the side of the precipitous coastal road of Amalfi. I had a notion that Mary was waiting for a coach to take her to Rome. I could explain the details of the drawing, however it is an image from my head, maybe you see it differently. ![]() Snow White and her Seven Samaritans At the first hotel in Meta near Napoli, I flung open the shutters and discovered a shrine outside. It wasn't the Virgin Mary but Snow White and the 7 dwarfs. How strange! We saw several more on our travels but no-one seemed to know why. Later on we discovered that Italia had just reclaimed the story of Snow White from the Germans. The sketch is based on an image of St. Francis of Assissi. ![]() Mona Goes Home to Shop It occurred to me on the coach trip that Mona Lisa was in Paris and probably missing her Tuscan homeland. I thought she might like to travel to Florence and drink capuchino in front of the Uffizzi, after shopping at Versace! ![]() The Creation of Pinochio Roma has been adorned by 21st century "artists" in the form of graffiti. I was sad to see that even the original Roman columns were adorned. We had very little time on the only rainy day to get to the Vatican and find the Sistine Chapel. Finally entering the darkened room I looked down the steps to what appeared to be Babel or Hell!! Thousands of foreign visitors all standing close together looking up at Michaelangelo's masterpiece, muttering in a hundred different tongues, and trying not to take photographs. After a few seconds I too became one of the throng. I have always been moved by the force between the hands of God and Adam; Adam's hand almost indifferent; God's sparking life force. Pinochio is another story originating in Italy. A small wooden boy who comes to life and becomes a bit of a hooligan. In the sketch I wanted to include the wooden puppet with the hand of God plus the work of indifferent youth. Comments03/26/2012 6:33am
